Erano passati ormai 4 anni!
L’ipotesi che fosse stato maschio non la prendevamo in considerazione e in quei nove mesi dicevamo sempre ‘lei’, ‘lei’;
No, non l’avrei mai chiamata Eugenia!

After the beautiful Neapolitan parenthesis, we were supposed to return to Treviso but Oriano was sent to Cervia, where he became Major and where, on the 21st of September 1974, our daughter Oriana was born.
The birth of our daughter was almost unexpected! After 4 years...!
But in Cesena, I asked advice from another gynaecologist, who noticed that, in fact, I had a uterine malformation.
Following his directions, after only three months I was pregnant!!
My husband's desire had always been a little girl and he used to repeat: "I would like her to be a blue-eyed blond little girl who, as an adult will be a musician". To know if she would have become a musician - in fact, she did not!- we waited for several years.
But for her physical characteristics, just a few months ... Oriano kept on saying: "Blonde and blue-eyed and I will dedicate you a monument!!".
I replied: "If it's a female, you'll build the base of a monument, if she has blue eyes you'll add the horse and if she'll ever become a musician you will also have to add... the knight!!".
We never took into consideration it could have ever been a little boy!!
During those 9 months, we always used only one pronoun: ‘she’, ‘her’; for Oriano she was Eugenia!
A name I didn't really like. Eugenia was a lady whom we, children, used to call aunt, being an old school-friend of my father's. She was a "huge" lady, exaggerated in everything: very tall, robust, and, next to her huge and flowery hats, she was always over the top and definitely excessive.
I would never have called our daughter Eugenia!!
The name I liked so much, but he did not, was Martina.
Our daughter was born on a Saturday afternoon, for sure a very special day but also a little bit odd (...)
