van den Brandeler (innanzi tutto notare la v e la d minuscole e solo la B è maiuscola: van den equivale all'italiano Di, De, Della, Dalla ecc...Di fatto in un elenco alfabetico il mio cognome va cercato sotto la lettera B).
La famiglia van den Brandeler, è una nobile famiglia olandese – siamo risaliti fino al 1376 –, originaria della provincia di Breda, che ha avuto molti possedimenti in Olanda e in Indonesia (piantagioni di zucchero e caffè).
Lo stemma di famiglia - che una volta era il sigillo - rappresenta una corona a 5 punte sotto la quale, si vedono due teste di cinghiali sopra a una merlatura. Sotto tutto c'è una stella.
Il motto recita ‘Quid nihil potest sperare, desperet nihil’: Chi non ha più niente in cui sperare, non disperi di nulla – Seneca: Medea, 163 – .
La greca e i due cinghiali nel sigillo, dicono che la nostra famiglia discende dal figlio illegittimo di famiglia reale; sembrerebbe che nel XII secolo, un principe scozzese si fosse innamorato di una serva e l’avesse messa incinta. Per non ucciderla, le avrebbe fatto attraversare i mari, l’avrebbe fatta sbarcare in Olanda e le avrebbe dato un pezzo di terra e un titolo nel caso il nascituro fosse stato un maschio.
Originariamente il cognome era van den Brandelaer (allora scritto con la ‘a’ fra la ‘l’ e la ‘e’).
Per tradizione, tutto ciò che appartiene al nome, che è "collegato" al nome, veniva e viene tramandato di padre in figlio: in realtà da padre al primo figlio maschio, anche se nato dopo una o più femmine. Che è il nostro caso: sei femmine prima del tanto agognato figlio maschio!!
van den Brandeler (first of all, note the lower case v and d and only B is capital: van den is equivalent to the Italian Di, De, Della, Dalla, etc ... In fact, in an alphabetical list my surname must be searched under the letter B).
The van den Brandeler family is a Dutch noble family - we date back to 1376 -, originally from the Province of Breda; it has had many possessions in Holland and in Indonesia (mainly sugar and coffee plantations).
The family crest - which once was the seal - represents a 5-pointed crown under which there are two wild boars' heads on top of a crenelation.
Under all, there is a star.
The motto says:' Quid nihil potest sperare,desperet nihil ’. (Who has nothing more to hope for, do not despair) - Seneca: Medea, 163 -.
The crenelation and the two wild boars' heads mean that our family originated from an illegitimate son of a royal family; it seems that in the XIIth century, a Scottish prince had fallen in love with a servant and when she became pregnant he was supposed to kill her and particularly the newborn child.
Instead, he hid her, and to do so he crossed the sea and docked in the Netherlands where he found (or perhaps...stole...bought...(?)) a piece of land and gave it to her with a title for the new-born child in case it would have been a male.
Traditionally everything belonging to the name, linked to the name passes on from father to son.
In fact from the father to the first son even if there already are one or more girls. This is the case of my family is 6 girls before the yearned son!
