Trascorsi quattro anni in Germania, Oriano venne richiamato a Roma per un lavoro molto interessante, ma lui non se la sentiva di tornare nella capitale e chiese, nel caso si fossero create delle opportunità, di essere spostato.
Gli proposero il commando della Scuola Interforze per la difesa NBC (Nucleare, Biologica e Chimica) nel Lazio a nord di Roma.
Partiti in macchina da Kalkar, arrivammo a Rieti la domenica del 5 settembre del 1999.
Di quel lungo viaggio di rientro in Italia, ho ancora impresso nella memoria il momento in cui uscimmo dall’ultima galleria della strada Terni-Rieti e davanti a noi si aprì la vallata del reatino: a sinistra campi di granturco, a destra, aggrappato al monte, il santuario di Greccio, una nuvola di silenzio tra fascino e mistero; subito dopo il grosso e tondo paese di Contigliano, cielo antico di storie e tradizioni... quasi non avevo fiato per dire checchesia... mi voltai verso Oriano che, pur guidando, si lasciò prendere la mano... poi una grande pianura con una distesa di girasoli dormienti, sorvegliata dal monte Terminillo, verde, immenso...
Fu amore a prima vista... e dopo un profondo sospiro dissi: «Non so tu, Minghetti, ma io sono già arrivata a casa».
Giunti davanti al portone della caserma Verdirosi fummo accolti (e spaventati) da un fortissimo boato; ci spiegarono che era il pubblico del Meeting di Atletica. Poi venimmo a sapere che il keniano Ngeny aveva stabilito il nuovo record mondiale sui 1000 metri.
Oriano trascorse tre giorni in caserma e il mercoledì accettò la nuova destinazione.
Tornammo in Germania e i primi di dicembre del 1999 ci trasferimmo definitivamente a Rieti, in uno degli appartamenti per ufficiali, nell’aeroporto Ciuffelli.
Nel 2001 trovammo casa a Belmonte in Sabina; nel 2003, dopo esser diventato generale, Oriano andò in pensione ed il 24 luglio 2004 ci trasferimmo a Belmonte.
After four years in Germany, we went back to Rome. Oriano was offered a very interesting job but he didn't feel like going back to the capital; so he asked for a different assignment and he was appointed as Commanding Officer of the Inter-services NBC Defence School (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical).
We drove from Kalkar, to Rieti where we arrived on Sunday, September 5th, 1999.
Of this journey, I still remember the moment we got out of the tunnel on the road coming from Terni.
In front of us, the Rieti valley opened up: on the left side, fields of maize; on the right, clinging to the mountain, the sanctuary of Greccio, a silent cloud of charm and mystery; immediately after the round and large village of Contigliano, the ancient sky of history and traditions ... I almost had no breath to say anything... I turned to Oriano who, though driving, accepted my hand into his... then maize turned into sleeping sunflowers, guarded by the huge and green Terminillo Mountain.
It was love at first sight! After a deep sigh, I said: "I don't know about you, Minghetti, but I am home."
Once in front of the gate of the Verdirosi barracks, we were welcomed, and frightened, by a very loud roar. They told us that it was the audience of the Athletics Meeting. Later we heard that the Kenyan Ngeny had set the new world record on the 1000 meters.
Oriano spent three days in the barracks and on Wednesday he accepted the new destination.
We returned to Germany and December 1st, 1999 we moved definitely to Rieti, into an officer's apartment at the Ciuffelli Airport.
In 2001 we found a house in Belmonte in Sabina; in 2003, after becoming general, Oriano retired and on July 24th, 2004 we moved to Belmonte.
