C'an Patina ad Esporles
Oltre tutto ci si poteva entrare all'istante.
La chiamarono C'an Patina.

RICETTE:

La porta d'ingresso   -   The front door

In the early 60s, my parents decided to look for a home to gather the whole family together during the various holidays.
A friend suggested them to go and have a look at the island of Mallorca.
After three days, and several houses that, in a way or another, were not the right ones, a few kilometers northwest of Palma, after a ride along a road that ran between evergreen orange trees, gnarled olive trees and almond trees that are already in bloom in February, they found themselves at Esporles in front of a low house built-in U, with old local stones and abundantly covered with bougainvillea. Here it is! For my parents, it was the classic love at first sight.
Above all, it was possible to enter immediately. The owners, an American couple, wanted to sell it turnkey, complete with everything. They had divorced and were only interested in sharing the proceeds. Apart from personal effects, nothing was taken away. It definitely had a charm of its own and it was very welcoming.  Originally it was a mill dating back to the 15th century.
My parents called it C'an Patina. C'an is home in the local dialect and Patina derives from the union of the names of two of my sisters we had lost. Patricia and BetTina.

By purchasing the house they acquired the "obligation" to guarantee to a local couple that already lived in a small room above the garage, to continue to live there remaining to service.
The family consisted of Catalina, Miguel and a little girl whose name I don't remember.
Catalina introduced us to what was her cooking.
Habits are very different from country to country!
Catalina woke us up in the morning with the scent of ... hot oven! Majorcan coca was baked every morning and served hot. In fact, it was prepared at any time, for any occasion, at any meal. There were several variations. The one my father preferred, certainly not early in the morning, was the one with the sobrasada.

La piscina  -  The swimming pool
 Recipes:
Coca mallorquina:  In Italy, there is the pizza; in Provence, you can have a pissaladière and in Mallorca the coca: it's a delicious dough baked in an oven and vegetables and...that's it!!

Sobrasada mallorquina: Spicy and smeary pork meat! on a slice of bread, it is a delight!!

Coca con sobrasada: To many people, the coca with only vegetables lacks in something...the sobrasada is perfect. To be tasted!

Affrontai così mio padre: «Vado a vivere in Italia».

Maiorca

January 3rd arrived: the day of their departure. Oriano had clear ideas and urged me to take a decision.
From my part, even though I had not yet overcome my fears, I wanted to try to understand and realize if he would be the man of my life; and after constant second thoughts, I decided to talk to my father.
I knew well that leaving my family and the life full of privileges that I led in Brazil, as the daughter of an ambassador, would not have been easy, but I also knew that returning to Rio and continuing a relationship with an exchange of letters, even if accompanied by recorded tapes and records, would not have given me the opportunity to understand and deepen my feelings towards Oriano.
So I faced my father: "I'm going to live in Italy".
My father knew my determination, but I was not yet of age and everything depended on him: "If you want to stay in Europe go ahead, but certainly not in Italy. You can go to your grandparents in Holland and find a job, and then at the age of twenty-one you will be free to decide your future ».
My father in his heart hoped that by encountering some difficulties, even from an economic point of view, I would certainly be back on my feet.
I was the eldest daughter and living in the diplomatic environment did imply that I would marry a noble husband, a diplomat.
But I had to understand if the story with Oriano could work out or not, I had to remain in Europe: that would allow me to be closer to Italy.

Bimba_Maiorca: Natale 1967 #1

Since my father's life was always full of movements from one country or continent to another, my parents had chosen a fixed place to meet for the holidays: Mallorca.
My father, having assignments often far from Europe, and from Mallorca, accumulated leave every two years to be able to enjoy his Spanish home for six/seven whole weeks.
Christmas 1967. The summer in Brazil was starting and my sisters' school had ended. The whole family left for our home in the Mediterranean Sea
My sister Alexandra had invited her Italian 'fiancé' to celebrate New Year 's Eve, on the largest of the Balearic Islands.
But a few hours before Augusto's arrival, Alexandra had a sudden attack of appendicitis and had to be hospitalized.
At that point, at my sister's request, I went to the airport. To my surprise and, honestly, a little bit disappointed,  I see Oriano, behind Augusto, getting out of the plane.
