Penso che, per tutti quanti, i simboli che caratterizzano il mio paese sono i pattini sul ghiaccio, le biciclette ed i tulipani.
Sui pattini è presto detto: il clima è decisamente cambiato. I canali , i polders ed il Mare del Nord non si congelano più.

Per secoli, la popolazione si è spostata sui canali ghiacciati. 50-60 anni fa ancora si pattinava anche se era solo per un paio di mesi l'anno. e non sempre era per divertimento.
Si usciva di casa, per esempio per andare a scuola, con i pattini appesi alla spalla, tenuti insieme dai lacci legati insieme e ai piedi delle scarpe con dei lacci per lo stesso motivo.
Arrivati al canale più vicino si sostituivano le scarpe con i pattini fino a destinazione quando si rimettevano i pattini in spalla.
In Italia ogni anno si svolge il Giro d'Italia, in Olanda si svolgeva “ De Elfstedentocht” - il giro in pattini delle 11 città - 200km attraverso la Frisia che ha coinvolto fino a 16.000 partecipanti.
Ma nel secolo scorso, questa gara si è svolta solo 15 volte dato che per autorizzare questa gara il ghiaccio deve aver raggiunto uno spessore di 20cm su tutto il tragitto. Appena arrivano le prime gelate tutta la popolazione partecipanti e non, attende giorno per giorno il risultato dei controllori dei ghiacci.
Da ragazza ricordo anche un' altra gara: l'attraversamento del Mare del Nord in macchina con gomme normali senza catene!
Quel ghiaccio doveva avere uno spessore di 60cm su tutto quel mare interno nel nord del paese.
Tanti pittori olandesi, nel corso dei secoli, hanno rappresentato scene invernali con pattinatori.
Mi dispiace sapere che sarà molto difficile poter assistere ancora a passeggiate, giochi, piroette e gare sui canali ghiacciati...

Talking about skates it's easy to say: the climate has definitely changed. The canals, polders and the North Sea no longer freeze.
Many of you have certainly read "The silver skates" written by Mary Papes Dodge.
For centuries, the population shifted on the frozen canals.
50-60 years ago, skating was still possible though it was only for a couple of months a year and it was not always just for fun.
Arriving at the nearest canal, the shoes, which were replaced by the skates, were tied up by their laces and carried on the shoulder. At the destination the skates and shoes were once more exchanged.
There used to be a skating tour around 11 cities of Friesland (northern Holland) called 'De Elfstedentocht': about 200km in length along frozen canals, rivers and lakes which involved up to 16,000 participants. But in the previous century, this race took place only 15 times, since, to authorize this race, the ice must reach a thickness of at least 20cm all along the way. As soon as the first frosts arrive, the whole population awaits the 'ice controllers' results day by day feeling really disappointed when he denies the authorization to race...
As a teenager, I also remember another race: crossing the North Sea driving a car with normal tires and...without skid chains!
That ice had to be at least 60cm thick on all that inland sea in the north of the country.
Many Dutch painters, over the centuries, have depicted winter scenes with skaters.
I am very sorry to know that it will always be more difficult to attend walks, games, pirouettes, and competitions on frozen canals ...
