Il mio bisnonno Henri Marius Elisa van den Brandeler nato a L’Aja il 9 aprile 1859 e deceduto a Parigi, il 21 aprile 1917. Sposò il 17 aprile 1884 Maria van Baak (Soerabaja, Indonesia, 6 settembre 1863 – Zeist, 22 marzo 1944).
Ebbero tre figli. Il primo, l’erede del nome e dei beni della famiglia, fu Wilhelm Albert, nacque in Indonesia il 22 giugno 1885 nella piantagione di zucchero Modjo Agoeng, a Djombang, Est Java.
Sposò nel 1917 in prime nozze la sorella di mia nonna: Sophia M.F. Ameshoff, conosciuta da tutti come Itty (1888-1956), la quale negli ultimi anni di vita, forse per il dolore dovuto alla perdita di una figlia nata morta nel 1923, si era convinta di essere stata scelta dal maestro Paganini, per far conoscere le sue opere che scriveva nell’aldilà.
Era una violinista? No! Era una musicista? No! Anzi, era anche terribilmente stonata.
Dopo aver convinto il marito a regalarle un violino, ogni notte saliva nell’immenso sottotetto della nostra casa di famiglia a Driebergen (Zeist) e ‘suonava’ con Paganini (per fortuna degli altri componenti della famiglia, la casa era talmente grande che venne convinta a spostarsi sopra l’ala destra, dove non c’erano camere); ma a parte questa sua mania, parlando della zia Itty, mia madre ha sempre detto: «Era la persona più dolce e gentile che abbia mai conosciuto». Nel 1956 zia Itty morì, e dopo due anni mio zio sposò Caecilia, che era presente ai funerali di zia Itty. Questa signora lo aspettava dal 1917, anno in cui mio zio sposò la zia Itty, ignaro del grande amore di Caecilia; sono cambiati i tempi... Caecilia, all’età di sessantatre anni, prendendo il coraggio a due mani, si fece avanti, coronando finalmente il sogno del suo grande amore. Otto anni dopo il matrimonio, nel 1966, dopo aver sepolto anche la zia Caecilia, mio zio si spense nella casa di Driebergen, senza lasciare eredi. Il titolo, il nome e i beni passarono al secondo figlio, mio nonno Bastiaan ‘Opi’. Anche lui nacque nella piantagione dei suoi genitori in Indonesia, il 29 aprile 1886, si trasferì nei Paesi Bassi, diventando magistrato, e nel 1912 sposò Anna Emila Albertina (Anja) Ameshoff ‘Omi’ (Utrecht, 26 giugno 1890 – Zeist, 2 febbraio 1968).

He married Maria van Baak on April the 17th, 1884 in Soerabaja (Indonesia) she was born on September 6th, 1863 and died in Zeist (The Netherlands) on March 22nd, 1944.
They had three children. The first, the heir of the family's name and riches, was Wilhelm Albert, born in Indonesia on June 22nd, 1885 in the Modjo Agoeng sugar plantation, in Djombang, East Java.
In 1917 he married my grandmother's sister in a first marriage: Sophia M.F. Ameshoff, known by all as Itty (1888-1956), who in the last years of her life, perhaps for the pain due to the loss of a daughter born dead in 1923, had convinced herself that she had been chosen by Master Paganini, to display the works he wrote in afterlife.
Was she a violinist? No! Was she a musician? No!
In fact, she was terribly out of tune...
After convincing her husband to buy her a violin, every night she went up to the immense attic of our family home in Driebergen (Zeist) and 'played' with Paganini.
Fortunately for the other members of the family, the house was so big that they convinced her to move over to the right-wing, where there were no bedrooms. Apart from her mania, speaking of Aunt Itty, my mother used to say: "She was the sweetest and kindest person I had ever known."
In 1956 Aunt Itty died, and after two years my uncle married Caecilia, whom he meets again at Aunt Itty's funeral.
This lady had been waiting for him since 1917 when my uncle married Aunt Itty, unaware of Caecilia's great love; times have changed...
Caecilia, at the age of sixty-three, as bold as brass, came forward and finally, her wait had paid back!!
She married her big love and they lived together for 7 years.
Eight years after the wedding, in 1966, after having also buried Aunt Caecilia, my uncle passed away, without heirs.
The title, name and riches passed to the second son, my grandfather Bastiaan 'Opi'.
He, too, was born on the plantation of his parents in Indonesia (April 29th, 1886). He moved to the Netherlands to attend university, graduated in law and became a magistrate.
In 1912 he married Anna Emila Albertina (Anja) Ameshoff 'Omi' born in Utrecht (The Netherlands) on June 26th, 1890 and passed away in Zeist (The Netherlands), February 2nd, 1968.
