Il 4 gennaio 1968 presi l’aereo per l’Olanda e grazie alla conoscenza delle lingue straniere, nel mio paese nativo trovai subito lavoro in una agenzia di viaggi, a Leida.
Insieme a me, destinazione Olanda, partiva anche una lettera di mio padre a una sua carissima amica, con due figli maschi della mia stessa età; la lettera conteneva l’incarico di farmi conoscere gli amici dei suoi figli.
E al mio arrivo in Olanda, devo dire che si diedero parecchio da fare, organizzando serate piacevoli e presentandomi ragazzi simpatici dell’alta borghesia, ma io aspettavo solo che Oriano ottenesse qualche giorno di permesso per potermi venire a trovare (si trovava a Lecce, dove cominciava il suo addestramento da pilota militare).
Oriano venne a trovarmi il sedici marzo e passammo una settimana insieme, così ebbi modo di presentarlo ai nonni paterni e anche all’amica di mio padre, che da quel momento smise di invitarmi alle varie feste, essendosi resa conto che io mi ritenevo impegnata.
On 4 January 1968, I took the plane to Holland and thanks to my knowledge of foreign languages, in my native country I immediately found work at a travel agency, in Leiden.
Together with me, destination Holland, my father sent also a letter to a dear friend of his, that had two sons of my age; this letter contained the task of introducing me to her children's friends.
And upon my arrival in Holland, I must say that they all worked very hard, organizing pleasant evenings and presenting me nice boys from the upper middle class, but I was just waiting for Oriano to get a few days off so he could come and see me (he was staying in Lecce, where he began his military pilot training).
Oriano came to see me on March 16th and we spent a week together, so I was able to introduce him to my paternal grandparents and also to my father's friend, who from that moment stopped inviting me to the various parties as she realized that I considered myself committed.
