Dopo un circa un mese cominciarono ad arrivarmi lettere dall’Italia, accompagnate da nastri registrati e da canzoni di Mina.
E ricordo alcune frasi della prima lettera che mi scrisse Oriano:
"...Io speravo solamente in qualcosa che ti somigliasse e invece ho conosciuto proprio te. Sono innamorato, lo sono sempre stato fin da quando, ancor prima di conoscerti ti ho pensata, fin da quando il mio primo pensiero d’amore mi suggerì che al mondo non c’è niente di più importante che amare.
Si, innamorato dunque dell’amore e del suo strumento, di te..."
Oriano scriveva cose bellissime, da innamorato, ma io rimanevo abbastanza fredda e rispondevo quasi in maniera anonima, in attesa di un qualcosa che forse volevo, ma allo stesso tempo temevo: a quei tempi non potevo parlarne con nessuno, ma l’esperienza di Damasco con quell’uomo di trent'anni (io ne avevo 17), mi aveva forse definitivamente allontanata dal sesso e da una storia d’amore?
Intanto anche mia sorella Alexandra aveva conosciuto un cadetto, Augusto, col quale aveva iniziato una relazione epistolare.

Oriano, being in love, wrote beautiful letters, but, somewhere inside me, they left me quite cold and my answers were nearly anonymous, awaiting something that I probably wanted, but at the same time I feared.
I was at sixes and sevens and, at that time, these were arguments you could not talk about with anyone. The experience I had in Damascus with that 30 years old man (I was 17), had perhaps definitely removed me from sex and a love story?
In the meantime, my sister Alexandra had also met a cadet: Augusto, with whom she had begun an epistolary relationship.
